You’re not reading my mind, you’re only looking at my Facebook

The future looks bleak for mind readers as new customer will tell them: “you’re not reading my mind, you’re only looking at my Facebook”. But nevertheless a strong campaign by Duval Guillaume ( Geoffrey Hantson) about on-line privacy and safe-banking.

The people in the video look very surprised about what they shared and this definitely  should make you think about what you share, and how you share it. It also makes me wonder how many people will close their Facebook account after viewing this video.

Especially the part of the video about the bank accounts is kind of scary, as I assume they did not post this on their Facebook timeline. For those of you who are able to find my bank account information on-line, feel free to make a 0.1$/0.1€ deposit into my account to show you are in the know.

Is twitter removing the oxygen from its ecosystem?

On 29 June 2012, LinkedIn announced tweets generated on twitter would no longer appear on LinkedIn. (Source)

On 20 september 2012, Linden Tibbets (CEO IFTTT) emailed the IFTTT-community that they will be removing all twitter triggers from its service in order to comply with the new guidelines by twitter. An extract from the email:

In recent weeks, Twitter announced policy changes* that will affect how applications and users like yourself can interact with Twitter’s data. As a result of these changes, on September 27th we will be removing all Twitter Triggers, disabling your ability to push tweets to places like email, Evernote and Facebook. All Personal and Shared Recipes using a Twitter Trigger will also be removed.
*These Twitter policy changes specifically disallow uploading Twitter Content to a “cloud based service” (Section 4A https://dev.twitter.com/terms/api-terms) and include stricter enforcement of the Developer Display Requirements (https://dev.twitter.com/terms/display-requirements).

Is twitter afraid of app.net? or just worried their ecosystem is not generating enough revenue yet? Or is IFTTT too fundamental about this? Could IFTTT comply with these guidelines by only excluding some specific recipes? I don’t know. But I do know most of my IFTTT recipes are using Twitter. For me the ecosystem will be loosing value on on September 27th.

In the past Twitter has been the Social Network known for its “openness” towards users as well as developers. But apparently Twitter no longer wants to be a “Protocol” or an “Interface” but prefers to be the “Application” or the “Community”.

I’m still wondering whether this strategic change will be beneficial for the total ecosystem, or Twitter in particular.

The Moose is Loose

The word is out, the moose is loose. Today our eLand has left the barns.  As eLand farmer, I’m proud and wish her all the best.  In the last years I’ve witnessed a few startups taking off and learned now is probably the most scary part. In the next months everything will be about working, working, working,… so that should be easy part.
Thank you all for your support!

Why reading a Lufthansa newsletter is a tragic waste of time

Another day, another newsletter. Today Lufthansa is offering me a 40€ (Promotion code*) one can redeem after booking a long-haul ticket and next to this some “Great destinations at great prices“.

When hitting “All our offers“, things only get better as “Europe from 99€” is listed here.

After a quick look at the return-fare overview per destination, I notice the 99€ offer is only valid for Frankfurt am Main and Munich, but some of the other destinations are attractively priced. So I pick “Lisbon” starting from €159.

No such thing as a free-lunch
Cheap prices always require you to meet some conditions, so I quickly scan the list below.
I should be able to meet these conditions as I want to book a short trip in July or August.

Time to book some flights, but when looking at this price table for july 2012 none of the flights rates even remotely meet the advertised rates.

Lufthansa – Nonstop you.
I do understand technically even a €2.500 ticket would meet the “From 159€” qualification. But advertising something at €159 and selling it at €414 is a true waste of time. I’m afraid being truly customer oriented as suggested by the Lufthansa baseline requires a better connection between what is promised and what is actually offered.

Facebook for WordPress

Recently Facebook announced Facebook for WordPress, time for experimentation.
(most features are activated on this blog, and we will keep you updated about the outcome)

As one could expect the Facebook plugin supports “liking posts” as we know it, although still struggling with individual posts on an overview page. But this issue appears to be resolved with the 1.0.1 update, together with most of the formatting issues.

Together with the basic functionality the plug-in also offers Social Reading support and  a suggestion box and the bottom of the page. In this box personal suggestions are shown based on your visitors liking behavior. This comes right out of the plug-in-box but is only as powerful as the Facebook community you address with your website.

With Social Reading you can offer the same functionality on your blog as the guardian and the likes, allowing visitors to share automatically what they read on your website.
